07:05 AM EDT, 04/04/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Meta Platforms ( META ) may be sued in Kenya over its alleged role in promoting content linked to ethnic violence in neighboring Ethiopia, Reuters said a Kenyan court ruled Thursday.
The report said the landmark case, which stems from allegations of hate speech on Facebook during Ethiopia's 2020-2022 civil war in the Tigray region, could have broader implications for Meta's global content moderation practices.
Meta had argued that local courts lacked jurisdiction over the company due to its absence of registration in Kenya, but the High Court rejected the argument, according to Reuters.
Meta did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment on the decision.
