07:43 AM EDT, 05/28/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Meta Platforms ( META ) has taken steps to fight the spread of disinformation and misinformation ahead of European Parliament elections, Reuters reported Monday, citing the European Commission.
Meta recently added features to its misinformation tracking tool CrowdTangle ahead of and during the June 6 to June 9 European Parliament elections, Reuters reported, citing a statement from the company.
The Commission opened an investigation last month into alleged potential abuses of Meta's platforms by ill-willed political actors and the impact of Meta's decision to phase out CrowdTangle. The Commission recently praised the company for "new functionalities" that "allow third-party real-time civic discourse and election monitoring," Reuters said, citing a Commission spokesperson.
Candidates running in the election will receive a prominent notification on Facebook alerting them on how to secure their accounts from hackers and protect themselves and their families by setting up two-factor authentication, reviewing security settings, and filtering out hateful messages, Reuters reported.
Meta said last week it would set up live displays for each EU country in the elections featuring real-time election monitoring by researchers and civil society groups.
The Commission and Meta Platforms ( META ) did not immediately reply to MT Newswires' requests for comment.
