07:29 AM EDT, 10/16/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Meta Platforms ( META ) should face lawsuits by US states alleging that Meta platforms Facebook and Instagram are addictive and causing mental health problems among teenagers, Reuters reported Tuesday, citing a ruling by a federal judge in California.
US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers declined Meta's bid to dismiss a lawsuit filed by over 30 states, including California and New York, and another filed by Florida last year, according to the report.
The judge also denied motions by Meta, ByteDance's TikTok, Google parent Alphabet's (GOOG) YouTube, and Snap's (SNAP) Snapchat to dismiss related personal injury lawsuits by individual plaintiffs, the report added.
The ruling allows states and other plaintiffs to gather more evidence and potentially go to trial, Reuters said.
A Meta spokesperson said the company had developed numerous tools to support parents and teens, while a Google spokesperson said the allegations are "simply not true," Reuters added.
Meta, Alphabet and Snap did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
