07:25 AM EDT, 03/18/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Meta Platforms ( META ) is under federal investigation for the role of its social media platforms in facilitating the sale of illegal drugs, The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday, citing documents and people familiar with the matter.

Prosecutors in Virginia have been sending subpoenas requesting records related to "violative drug content" or the illicit sale of drugs on Meta's platforms, notably Instagram and Facebook, the Journal said.

The Food and Drug Administration has been helping with the investigation, according to the report.

"Meta proactively cooperates with law enforcement authorities to help combat the sale and distribution of illicit drugs," a spokesperson for the company was quoted by the Journal.

Meta and the FDA did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' requests for comment.
