08:02 AM EST, 12/13/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Mexico's Senate unanimously passed reforms to improve benefits for ride-hailing and delivery workers on platforms like Uber Technologies ( UBER ) , DiDi, and Rappi, Reuters reported late Thursday.
The legislation was approved with 113 votes in favor and now awaits enactment, the report said.
The reforms, proposed earlier this month by President Claudia Sheinbaum, guarantee workers earning at least a minimum wage on an app -- about $414 per month starting in 2025 -- access to social security, pensions, maternity leave, accident insurance, a share of company profits, and Christmas bonuses, Reuters reported. The bill will also allow those workers to unionize, Reuters said.
Workers earning below the minimum wage will be entitled to work-related accident protection and other limited benefits, the report added.
Uber ( UBER ), DiDi, and Rappi did not immediately reply to MT Newswires' requests for comment.
