02:41 PM EDT, 06/18/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Microsoft's ( MSFT ) sales team lost several deals as OpenAI started discounting enterprise subscriptions for ChatGPT when customers spend on additional artificial intelligence products, The Information reported Wednesday, citing sources.
Customers could receive ChatGPT discounts of 10% to 20% when they enter a multi-year agreement to purchase other OpenAI products, including its Deep Research and Codex coding agents, the report said, citing an OpenAI spokesperson and two executives who recently spoke with OpenAI.
Microsoft ( MSFT ), which is OpenAI's top business partner, also sells competing apps and models including the Copilot chatbot, often without discounts, according to the report.
A Microsoft ( MSFT ) spokesperson told The Information that the company offers "competitive pricing" that at times matches or exceeds OpenAI's discounting, and Azure's security guarantees make it "distinct" from OpenAI's direct sales of AI models.
Microsoft ( MSFT ) and OpenAI didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
