07:59 AM EDT, 04/01/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Microsoft ( MSFT ) and OpenAI plan to set up a data center with a supercomputer known as the Stargate, The Information reported Friday, citing three unnamed sources with knowledge of the matter.

The project may cost roughly $100 billion, the report said, citing one of the sources who reportedly spoke to OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman. Microsoft ( MSFT ) will likely fund the project, the report added.

Separately, OpenAI is planning to open an office in Tokyo this month, Bloomberg reported Monday, citing a person familiar with the plan.

The Tokyo office will be the first in Asia, the report said, citing the person. OpenAI already has offices in London and Dublin.

Neither Microsoft ( MSFT ) nor OpenAI immediately responded to MT Newswires' requests for comment.
