Market Chatter: Microsoft Seeks Clarity on US AI Export Rules to Middle East
Sep 23, 2024 12:15 AM

07:42 AM EDT, 09/18/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Microsoft ( MSFT ) wants more "clarity and consistency" from US officials on controls over artificial intelligence chip exports to the Middle East, the Financial Times reported Tuesday, citing a company executive.

Microsoft ( MSFT ) President and Vice-Chair Brad Smith said a lack of clarity on rules has held up exports to new AI institutes in the United Arab Emirates in collaboration with its Abu Dhabi-based partner G42.

The US has placed restrictions on the export of chips to the Middle East for fear the technology could fall into China's hands, the FT reported. G42 has been accused of having ties to China, the FT said.

Microsoft ( MSFT ) did not immediately reply to MT Newswires' request for comment.
