07:44 AM EDT, 04/09/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Microsoft ( MSFT ) plans to invest $2.9 billion in data centers in Japan by 2025, Nikkei Asia reported Tuesday, citing an interview with the software giant's president, Brad Smith.
The project includes the installation of advanced artificial intelligence semiconductors as two of the company's existing sites in Japan, as well as a planned lab in Tokyo for AI and robotics research and development, the report said.
Microsoft ( MSFT ) also plans to hold an AI-related reskilling program to train 3 million workers in the country over three years, the report added.
Microsoft ( MSFT ) is set to announce more details on its investment plans in the coming hours, coinciding with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's visit to Washington, Nikkei reported.
Microsoft ( MSFT ) did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
