Market Chatter: Microsoft-Backed OpenAI Loses Copyright Case in Germany
Nov 11, 2025 2:49 AM

05:28 AM EST, 11/11/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Microsoft ( MSFT ) -backed OpenAI lost a court battle in Germany after a judge ruled in favor of music rights organization GEMA over the technology company's use of copyrighted German songs without authorization, Reuters reported Tuesday.

GEMA filed the copyright case in November 2024, accusing OpenAI of "unlicensed reproduction" of its members' song lyrics.

Reuters said the German court ruled that OpenAI is not allowed to use song lyrics without a license and ordered the company to pay damages. No financial details were disclosed.

OpenAI and GEMA did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' requests for comments.
