Market Chatter: Microsoft-backed OpenAI Plans to Spend $100 Billion on Backup Servers
Sep 21, 2025 2:12 AM

11:38 AM EDT, 09/19/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Microsoft ( MSFT )-backed (MSFT) OpenAI plans to spend about $100 billion over the next five years to rent backup servers from cloud providers, The Information reported Friday, citing comments from OpenAI executives to certain shareholders.

The investment would be on top of the $350 billion already budgeted through 2030, the report said.

The move is part of a bigger infrastructure push meant to keep up with demand surges, according to the report. Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar has said OpenAI is "massively compute constrained," sometimes slowing down services or delaying new releases because there simply aren't enough servers or processing power available, the report said.

The server investments could push the company's total cash burn to $115 billion by 2029, though OpenAI expects to become cash flow positive in 2030, with projected revenue rising to $200 billion by 2030 from $13 billion this year, the report said.

OpenAI has also been hiring talent from Apple (AAPL), including engineers and designers from key hardware, manufacturing, and supply chain teams, The Information said in a separate report, citing current and former Apple employees and a review of LinkedIn profiles.

OpenAI has hired this year over two dozen former Apple employees who worked on consumer hardware, the report said, citing LinkedIn data. Leading this push is Tang Tan, OpenAI's chief hardware officer and a longtime Apple veteran, who is assembling a team to develop new AI-native devices, the report said.

Microsoft ( MSFT ) invested $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019 and an additional $10 billion in early 2023, according to multiple media reports. The companies also said last Thursday that they signed a nonbinding memorandum of understanding for the next phase of their partnership.

Microsoft ( MSFT ) declined to comment, and OpenAI and Apple didn't immediately respond to MT Newswires' requests for comments.
