Market Chatter: Microsoft-Backed OpenAI Seeks Cut to Revenue Sharing Deal
Sep 15, 2025 4:21 AM

07:13 AM EDT, 09/15/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Microsoft ( MSFT )-backed (MSFT) OpenAI has informed some of its stockholders that the percentage of revenue it will pay to the tech giant will fall significantly in the coming years as it seeks to renegotiate the terms of its partnership, The Information reported late Friday.

Under the terms of their original collaboration deal, Microsoft ( MSFT ) is entitled to receive 20% of OpenAI's revenue through 2030, but the startup has estimated it will share about 8% of its revenue with commercial partners, including Microsoft ( MSFT ), by the end of this decade, the report said, adding that the difference between those amounts adds up to more than $50 billion in additional revenue.

Microsoft ( MSFT ) and OpenAI are also negotiating what will happen when OpenAI achieves artificial general intelligence and how much OpenAI will spend to rent servers from Microsoft ( MSFT ), the news outlet said, citing a person familiar with the plan.

While many details are still pending, some aspects have been largely agreed upon, people close to the talks told The Information.

Teams from both sides, including Microsoft ( MSFT ) Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood and OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar, have been meeting weekly to draft out the details of OpenAI's restructuring, according to the report, citing an unnamed person.

Neither Microsoft ( MSFT ) nor OpenAI immediately responded to MT Newswires' requests for comment.
