06:32 AM EDT, 06/24/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Northern Trust ( NTRS ) is committed to staying independent, Reuters reported Monday, following a report from The Wall Street Journal that Bank of New York Mellon ( BK ) approached the company to discuss a possible merger.

According to Reuters, a company spokesperson said in an email that Northern Trust ( NTRS ) is "fully committed to remaining independent and continuing to deliver long-term value to our stakeholders."

The comment comes after The Wall Street Journal reported that the chief executives of Northern Trust ( NTRS ) and BNY Mellon had at least one conversation about the matter but that they did not discuss a specific offer. The news outlet's sources said BNY Mellon is considering its next steps, which might include formally making an offer.

Northern Trust ( NTRS ) and BNY Mellon did not immediately respond to MT Newswires requests for comment.
