Market Chatter: Nvidia, AMD and Others Could Face Country-Specific Export Caps on AI Chips Amid US National Security Concerns
Oct 15, 2024 9:52 AM

08:18 AM EDT, 10/15/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Nvidia ( NVDA ) , along with AMD (AMD) and other American companies, may face country-specific caps on the export of advanced AI chips, as US government officials have discussed implementing such limits in the interest of national security, Bloomberg reported Tuesday, citing unnamed sources.

The move is aimed at limiting some nations' artificial intelligence capabilities, with a focus on Persian Gulf countries that show increasing interest in AI data centers and have significant resources to fund such projects, the sources said.

The unnamed sources said the discussions are still in early stages, but the policy has gained momentum in recent weeks.

The US already restricts AI chip exports to over 40 countries across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia due to concerns that the technology could be diverted to China.

An NVIDIA ( NVDA ) spokesperson declined to comment. AMD and Intel ( INTC ) did not immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
