06:20 AM EDT, 09/24/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Nvidia ( NVDA ) is discussing a new business model with Microsoft ( MSFT )- (MSFT) backed OpenAI to lease its AI chips rather than sell them, The Information reported late Tuesday, citing sources familiar with the talks.
The leasing arrangement is designed to help OpenAI manage high computing costs while avoiding the need to raise large sums for chip purchases, with OpenAI estimating savings of 10% to 15% on server chip costs, the report said.
This also allows Nvidia ( NVDA ) to offer its components to smaller clients who can not afford the tech giant's chips, the report added.
The leasing model may reduce risk for Nvidia ( NVDA ) by setting up an entity to buy the servers and use the chips as collateral for loan repayments, the report said.
OpenAI currently leases Nvidia ( NVDA ) chip servers from Microsoft ( MSFT ) and Oracle (ORCL), but it is unclear how much a direct lease from Nvidia ( NVDA ) could cost, the report said.
Nvidia ( NVDA ) did not immediately respond to an MT Newswires' request for comment.
