Market Chatter: OpenAI Says Indian Court Lacks Jurisdiction in Case Over Indian News Agency Copyright Infringement
Jan 23, 2025 2:32 AM

05:08 AM EST, 01/23/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Microsoft ( MSFT )-backed (MSFT) OpenAI told an Indian court that it had no authority to order it to remove training data using Indian news organizations from its ChatGPT service, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing an 86-page court filing submitted on Jan. 10.

The company said removing data from the Indian news agency ANI, which has sued OpenAI for copyright infringement, would violate its US legal obligations, the report said.

ANI took OpenAI to court last year for allegedly using its content to train its artificial intelligence language model without permission, the report said.

OpenAI also claimed that the Indian court did not have jurisdiction over the case, as the company's operations are based outside of India and the servers storing the training data are also located abroad, the report said.

OpenAI did not immediately reply to MT Newswires' request for comment.
