09:37 AM EDT, 08/22/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Microsoft ( MSFT )-backed (MSFT) OpenAI has been using data scraped from Alphabet's Google ( GOOG ) search engine to help ChatGPT answer questions, The Information reported Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter.
The data, which OpenAI gets from web-scraping firm SerpApi, helps ChatGPT respond to real-time queries about news, sports, and financial markets, the report said.
The report said that SerpApi had listed OpenAI as a customer on its website until May 2024, but noted that references to the company had since been removed for unknown reasons.
Google ( GOOG ) has tried to make it more difficult for SerpApi to scrape "high-quality information" through its web crawler, but the extent to which these efforts have been successful is unclear, the report said.
"We retrieve accurate, contextually relevant information from web pages and a variety of providers. This allows us to surface and synthesize information from multiple sources," an OpenAI spokesperson said, according to the report.
OpenAI and Google ( GOOG ) did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' requests for comment.
