Market Chatter: Reliance Asks Indian Telecom Regulator to Reassess Impact of Starlink, Amazon's Kuiper on Local Companies
Nov 15, 2024 11:10 AM

11:59 AM EST, 11/15/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Reliance has asked India's telecom regulator to reassess the impact of Elon Musk's Starlink and Amazon's ( AMZN ) Kuiper satellite services before allocating satellite spectrum, Reuters reported Friday, citing a letter from Reliance owner Mukesh Ambani.

In the letter, Reliance said it carried about 15 billion gigabytes of data each month in India after spending around $23 billion on spectrum auctions, but Starlink would will get access to the same customers with a potential capacity of nearly 18 billion gigabytes via satellites at a likely much lower cost, Reuters reported.

"The authority should critically examine the capacities created by these mega ...constellations such as Starlink and Kuiper," the letter stated, according to the report.

A senior official at the telecom regulator said that all feedback would be reviewed before making final recommendations, which are expected by the end of the year, Reuters reported.

Starlink, Amazon ( AMZN ) and Reliance did not immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
