03:04 PM EDT, 08/14/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Renewed talks between BHP Group ( BHP ) and striking miners at the Escondida copper mine broke down as the two sides could not agree on conditions, Bloomberg reported Wednesday, citing a statement from the union.
With a strike at Escondida in Chile entering its second day, union leaders and BHP representatives met for a voluntary mediation session on Wednesday. A key demand from BHP for the resumption of negotiations was the halt of the strike, which involves 2,400 workers, the union reportedly told Bloomberg. However, union leaders required members' approval to proceed, and they couldn't complete that task before BHP's 2 p.m. local time deadline, Bloomberg said, citing the union.
BHP did not immediately respond to an MT Newswires request for comment. The union, called Union No. 1, could not be reached for comment by MT Newswires.
