Market Chatter: Sony to Receive Up to $377.2 Million Japan Subsidy for Image Sensor Plant

05:56 AM EDT, 04/17/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Sony Group ( SONY ) will receive Japan government subsidies of up to 60 billion Japanese yen ($377.2 million) for an image sensor facility in the city of Kumamoto, Reuters reported late Thursday, citing industry minister Ryosei Akazawa as saying in a press conference.

Image sensors will be essential for autonomous driving and physical artificial intelligence, Akazawa said during the press conference.

Sony ( SONY ) did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
