Market Chatter: Taco Bell's Voice AI-Powered Ordering Needs Clearer Use Case Scenario, Executive Says
Aug 28, 2025 7:30 AM

10:13 AM EDT, 08/28/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Yum! Brands ( YUM )-owned (YUM) Taco Bell is realizing that voice AI-powered ordering, which the chain launched at more than 500 drive-through locations, might need a rethink, The Wall Street Journal said Thursday, citing Dane Mathews, the company's chief digital and technology officer.

Mathews said it might not make sense to exclusively use artificial intelligence at every drive-through, and that at busy restaurants, human teams might handle things better, according to the report.

While Taco Bell is still moving ahead with voice AI, the question remains as to what Taco Bell expects the technology to do and where will it build offramps for humans to intervene, the report said.

Yum! Brands ( YUM ) did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
