Market Chatter: Tesla to Redesign Door Handles After Safety Scrutiny
Sep 18, 2025 4:12 AM

06:49 AM EDT, 09/18/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Tesla (TSLA) is redesigning its door handles to combine electronic and manual releases into a single control, Bloomberg reported Wednesday, citing the company's design chief, Franz von Holzhausen.

The company is working to merge the mechanisms into a single button to make the handles more intuitive in "a panic situation," von Holzhausen said in an interview for Bloomberg's Hot Pursuit! podcast.

An investigation found incidents in which people were injured or died when doors failed to open following power loss, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received more than 140 consumer complaints about stuck or malfunctioning doors since 2018, the report said.

The NHTSA has opened a probe covering an estimated 174,290 Model Y SUVs from the 2021 model year to assess Tesla's door-lock power supplies and their reliability, the report said.

Tesla did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.

Shares of Tesla were up over 1.7% in recent Thursday premarket activity.
