Market Chatter: The New York Times Plans Paywall for Top Podcasts to Boost Revenue
Jun 25, 2024 1:13 PM

03:58 PM EDT, 06/25/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The New York Times ( NYT ) is planning to restrict access to its top podcasts by placing them behind a paywall to boost revenue, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

Non-subscribers may soon access only the three latest episodes of "The Daily," while "Serial" will be entirely restricted. Over time, more podcasts are expected to follow suit, with the ultimate goal of linking most, if not all, shows to a subscription service, the Journal reported.

Subscribers will likely retain the ability to access these podcasts on platforms like Spotify ( SPOT ) and Apple's ( AAPL ) Podcasts, while The New York Times ( NYT ) intends to continue selling advertising space alongside its podcasts, the people told the Journal.

The New York Times ( NYT ) didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
