Market Chatter: TotalEnergies Decides Not to Invest in NextDecade's New Texas LNG Facility
Aug 7, 2025 9:40 AM

12:22 PM EDT, 08/07/2025 (MT Newswires) -- TotalEnergies (TTE) has decided not to invest in NextDecade's ( NEXT ) fifth LNG export unit in Texas or purchase gas from it, Reuters reported Thursday, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The energy company is shifting focus to lower-cost LNG projects in other countries as it reassesses its global strategy, according to the report.

The move reflects a broader shift as TotalEnergies prioritizes restarting its $20 billion LNG project in Mozambique and expanding in Canada and Qatar, the media outlet reported.

NextDecade ( NEXT ) is still aiming to make a final investment decision on Train 5 by mid-September and is trying to secure deals for 2.5 million tons of LNG annually, Reuters reported, citing the company.

The company is reportedly also dealing with higher construction costs from US steel tariffs, tough competition from Venture Global, and expectations of a global LNG surplus after 2027.

TotalEnergies and NextDecade ( NEXT ) did not immediately respond to requests for a comment from MT Newswires.
