11:01 AM EDT, 05/21/2024 (MT Newswires) -- TotalEnergies (TTE) Chief Executive Patrick Pouyanne and other company board members are facing a criminal complaint by climate change activists over their alleged role in climate turmoil caused by global warming, Bloomberg News reported Tuesday, citing a filing at the Paris Criminal Court.
The public prosecutor has the discretionary authority to determine if the complaint should be dismissed or if a judicial probe should be launched, the news outlet reported, citing non-governmental organizations Bloom, Alliance Sante Planetaire, and Nuestro Futuro, as well as eight individuals who jointly filed the complaint.
Harming biodiversity, involuntary manslaughter and intentionally endangering the lives of others are among offenses that are each punishable by at least one year of imprisonment and "tens of thousands of euros," the plaintiffs reportedly said.
A representative of TotalEnergies declined to comment, Bloomberg reported.
The company didn't immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
