08:07 AM EDT, 06/11/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Toyota Motor ( TM ) has violated Japan's national standards as well as the United Nations regulations as the country's transport ministry identified six instances of irregularities in vehicle certifications by the carmaker, the Yomiuri newspaper reported Tuesday, without saying where it got the information.
Obtaining vehicle certifications in Japan, which adheres to UN Regulations, allows manufacturers to receive certification in 61 other countries and regions, including in the European Union and the United Kingdom, without undergoing similar tests, the report said.
The six cases of irregularities in Toyota ( TM ) vehicles that include tests for offset frontal collision occupant protection, pedestrian head and leg protection, rear collision, and engine output, fall under 43 UN regulations for passenger vehicles, indicating the violations are not limited to Japanese standards but also breach UN standards, the report said.
Reuters reported that the violation of the UN standards could in theory mean "models could be ordered off the roads in places other than Japan," including in the EU.
Toyota Motor ( TM ) did not immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
