12:42 PM EST, 03/05/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The Trump Administration is considering a suspending its 25% tariffs on the automotive sector following pressure from auto manufacturers, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday.
Citing people familiar with the matter, the report said administration officials met with the heads of General Motors ( GM ) , Ford Motor ( F ) and Stellantis, who asked for a reprieve from the 25% tariffs imposed on Tuesday by Donald Trump on imports from Canada and Mexico, which could freeze their integrated North American operations.
The auto makers stressed the tariffs will raise the cost of new vehicles by thousands of dollars and are asking for relief "for vehicles made in North America that adhere to parts-sourcing rules under USMCA, the trade deal with Canada and Mexico that Trump negotiated in his first term", Bloomberg noted.
