Market Chatter: Trump Plans Executive Order to Boost Coal Power to Meet AI Demands
Apr 8, 2025 2:38 AM

05:29 AM EDT, 04/08/2025 (MT Newswires) -- President Donald Trump will sign an executive order to increase coal production and use in the US to meet rising power needs from artificial intelligence infrastructure, Bloomberg News reported Tuesday, citing a senior White House official.

The plan reportedly includes restarting coal leasing on federal land, classifying coal as a critical mineral, and expediting coal exports and related technologies.

Trump said the initiative supports the US lead in AI development and national security by ensuring stable electricity for expanding data centers, Bloomberg reported.

While the effort targets a coal revival, its impact remains uncertain as tech firms continue favoring cleaner energy sources over fossil fuels, the report said.

The White House did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
