Market Chatter: UK Regulators Press Meta, TikTok, Snap, YouTube to Boost Child Safety Measures
Mar 12, 2026 4:48 AM

07:19 AM EDT, 03/12/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Meta Platforms ( META ) , Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) YouTube ( GOOG ), Snap (SNAP) and TikTok are being urged by Britain's media and privacy regulators to tighten age verification and block underage users from their platforms, Reuters reported Thursday.

Ofcom and the Information Commissioner's Office said the companies are not properly enforcing minimum age rules, putting children at risk of harmful or addictive content, according to the report.

Regulators have given platforms until April 30 to enhance age checks, limit stranger contact, secure feeds, and halt testing on minors, with fines up to 10% of global revenue by Ofcom and 4% by the ICO, the report said.

Meta and YouTube ( GOOG ) defended their age verification efforts, citing AI-based detection and age-appropriate features, the report added.

Meta Platforms ( META ), Alphabet and Snap didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
