05:06 PM EDT, 07/17/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Union Pacific ( UNP ) is holding preliminary deal talks to acquire Norfolk Southern ( NSC ) , The Wall Street Journal reported late Thursday, citing sources.

The talks between the companies are in early stages, and a deal is not guaranteed. More suitors could also emerge, people familiar with the matter told the media outlet.

Union Pacific ( UNP ) didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires, while Norfolk Southern ( NSC ) declined to comment.

Shares of Norfolk Southern ( NSC ) were up 4% in after-hours trading.
