Market Chatter: United Airlines Expects Newark Flight Cuts Through Summer Amid FAA Issues
May 26, 2025 7:03 AM

01:34 PM EDT, 05/13/2025 (MT Newswires) -- United Airlines (UAL) expects to continue reducing flights at Newark Liberty International Airport through the summer and into the fall due to ongoing air traffic control problems and a staffing shortage, Bloomberg reported Tuesday, citing Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Nocella.

United Airlines earlier said it has cut 35 daily round trips at the New Jersey airport following a major technology outage in late April. The disruptions were worsened by a staffing shortage and outdated systems at the Federal Aviation Administration, Bloomberg said.

"Hopefully, as we'll get through the summer and fall, when staffing with the FAA improves, we can increase the number," Nocella was quoted by Bloomberg as saying.

Airlines operating at Newark are scheduled to meet Wednesday with FAA officials to discuss potential new flight limitations. Nocella anticipates more cancellations after the meeting but said they would not be in "large numbers," the report said.

United Airlines and the FAA didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
