07:41 AM EST, 11/27/2024 (MT Newswires) -- United Airlines (UAL) has cited the Federal Aviation Administration's decision to reduce traffic flow to Newark, New Jersey due to a shortage of air traffic controllers as the cause of the "significant disruption" at its Newark hub, multiple media outlets reported Tuesday, citing the airline.
The airline was quoted as saying that disruptions impacted over 343,000 travelers in November.
United Airlines reportedly emphasized the need for the FAA to address these staffing shortages amid the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.
The FAA said Tuesday it is addressing a "decades-long issue of staffing" in the Newark airspace and has been updating airlines and travelers about its initiatives.
The agency said it moved the Newark sector out of New York Terminal Radar Approach Control Facilities, or TRACON, into the Philadelphia TRACON, "where there is a pipeline of air traffic controllers eager to work there and already being trained."
FAA said its initiatives to address staffing shortages, weather events and other factors affecting travel "slow aircraft to keep the system safe."
