06:03 AM EST, 02/06/2025 (MT Newswires) -- US lawmakers are planning to propose legislation banning the DeepSeek chatbot app from government-owned devices, citing security concerns that it could send user data to the Chinese government, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.
The bipartisan bill was written by Illinois Rep. Darin LaHood, a Republican, and New Jersey Rep. Josh Gottheimer, a Democrat, who are members of a subcommittee of the House Select Committee on Intelligence, the media outlet said.
"This should be a no-brainer in terms of actions we should take immediately to prevent our enemy from getting information from our government," Gottheimer said, according to the report.
Some US federal agencies, including the Navy and NASA, have already blocked the app. Texas also banned the app over national security concerns, the Journal reported.
The White House and DeepSeek did not immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
