01:57 PM EDT, 07/31/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The US is weighing levying unilateral restrictions on China's access to AI memory chips and equipment capable of making such semiconductors as early as next month, Bloomberg reported Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.
The effort is designed to keep Micron Technology ( MU ) , SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics from supplying Chinese companies with high-bandwidth memory chips, Bloomberg reported, citing the people, who reportedly added no final decision has been made.
If enacted, the new restrictions would capture HBM2 and HBM3 chips, as well as the most cutting-edge AI memory chips being produced right now -- HBM3E -- the people told Bloomberg. HBM chips are required to run AI accelerators like those provided by Nvidia ( NVDA ) and Advanced Micro Devices ( AMD ) , according to the report.
