04:09 PM EDT, 09/06/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Vale (VALE), BHP Group ( BHP ) and their joint venture Samarco are close to a potential agreement with Brazilian authorities to pay nearly 100 billion reais ($17.89 billion) for the 2015 dam collapse in Mariana, Reuters reported, citing sources.
Sources familiar with the matter told the publication they anticipate the agreement may be finalized by October.
The proposed sum exceeds the 82 billion reais proposal by the companies made in June to compensate for the disaster, the report said.
Vale, BHP, and Samarco did not immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
