Market Chatter: Vale, Samarco Face $3.8 Billion Lawsuit in the Netherlands Over Mariana Dam Break

01:45 PM EDT, 03/19/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Vale (VALE) and Samarco are facing a 3 billion British pounds ($3.8 billion) lawsuit in the Netherlands brought by victims affected by the Mariana dam break in 2015, Reuters reported Tuesday, citing the victims' lawyers.

The lawsuit covers claims of about 1,000 businesses and more than 77,000 individuals, according to the report.

Dutch firm Lemstra Van der Korst and British firm Pogust Goodhead filed the lawsuit against Vale and Samarco's Samarco Iron Ore Europe unit, the Reuters reported.

Neither Vale nor Samarco immediately responded to MT Newswires' requests for comment.
