Market Chatter: Walt Disney, Warner Bros. Exclusive Discussion Period for New NBA Contract Ends Without Deal
Apr 23, 2024 11:42 AM

02:15 PM EDT, 04/23/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Walt Disney's ( DIS ) and Warner Bros. Discovery's ( WBD ) exclusive discussion period for a new broadcast contract with the National Basketball Association concluded Monday without a deal, opening the way for other potential bidders to proceed, Bloomberg reported Tuesday.

The NBA plans to continue negotiations with ESPN ( DIS ) and Turner networks' parent companies for the renewal of their rights, a league spokesperson said, according to the report.

The NBA's current nine-year deal is valued at $24 billion, and the league is seeking to double that fee, potentially by bringing in new partners such Comcast's ( CMCSA ) NBC, Amazon.com ( AMZN ) or Apple (APPL), the report said.

NBA officials seek to add at least one more outlet and can add a fourth if a suitable deal is found, the report said citing a person familiar with the matter.

Negotiations for broadcast rights are also underway for the Women's National Basketball Association. The WNBA rights are currently held by Disney ( DIS ), E.W. Scripps (SSP), Paramount Global's ( PARAA ) CBS and Amazon ( AMZN ).

The NBA, Disney ( DIS ) and Warner Bros. didn't immediately respond to MT Newswires' requests for comment.
