Market Chatter: Warner Bros. Discovery Considers Matching Amazon's Bid for NBA Game Rights

01:11 PM EDT, 05/23/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Warner Bros. Discovery ( WBD ) is focusing on matching Amazon.com's ( AMZN ) potential offer for rights to National Basketball Association games, rather than a bid by Comcast's ( CMCSA ) NBCUniversal, CNBC reported Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter.

Warner Bros. Discovery ( WBD ) is weighing options to partner with the NBA on a broadcast package with the league close to signing deals with Walt Disney ( DIS ) , NBCUniversal and Amazon ( AMZN ) for different packages, the report said.

Warner Bros. Discovery ( WBD ) Chief Executive Officer David Zaslav has the option to exercise rights that allows the company to match a competing bid for games currently licensed and aired on TNT, the report said.

Amazon ( AMZN ) reportedly offered the NBA $1.8 billion, and NBCUniversal bid $2.5 billion for separate game packages, the report said.

Spokespeople for the NBA, Warner Bros. Discovery ( WBD ) and NBCUniversal declined to comment, and Amazon ( AMZN ) didn't immediately return a request for comment, CNBC said.

Warner Bros. Discovery ( WBD ), Amazon ( AMZN ), Comcast ( CMCSA ) and the NBA did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' requests for comment.

Warner Bros. Discovery ( WBD ) shares fell 3.1% in recent trading Thursday. Amazon ( AMZN ) dropped 0.4%, and Comcast ( CMCSA ) declined 0.5%
