01:02 PM EST, 03/07/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Match Group's ( MTCH ) Tinder agreed to provide European users with more clarity on how it arrives at personalized discounts, the European Commission said Thursday.
The online dating platform had been in talks with the EC and national consumer authorities since July 2022 after a study from Swedish found Tinder charged a difference price for premium services user to user without any clear pattern on what determined the pricing.
The practice of applying personalized discounts without explicitly informing consumers was in violation of EU consumer law, the EC said.
Tinder now plans to inform users why they are offered personalized discounts and disclose that such discounts are personalized using automated means, the EC said.
"The Consumer Protection Cooperation Network (will actively monitor how Tinder implements the commitments on the app, and where necessary, enforce compliance, for example by imposing fines," the EC said.
"While a majority of people use it for free, our premium features can help our users stand out," a Tinder spokesperson said in an email to MT Newswire. "We promote offers to our users, including personalized ones based on account activity. We are pleased to have worked with the CPC Network to make this information even clearer and more accessible." -
