07:57 AM EDT, 10/04/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Medtronic ( MDT ) said Friday that it issued an updated safety alert regarding its MiniMed 600 series or 700 series insulin pumps to inform users about certain situations that may reduce pump battery life, potentially causing the pump to stop insulin delivery "significantly sooner than expected."
Extended time without insulin delivery could cause hyperglycemia or diabetic ketoacidosis, Medtronic ( MDT ) said, adding it has received reports of 170 cases of hyperglycemia and 11 cases of diabetic ketoacidosis from January to September in the US, "potentially related to this issue."
Medtronic ( MDT ) said it first issued a voluntary recall of its MiniMed 630G, 670G, 770G and 780G systems in July to ask customers to follow their pump's built-in alerts for battery status.
The company said its investigation after the initial notification showed that pumps that have been dropped, bumped, or experienced physical impact even once may result in shortened battery life.
The company advised its users to always carry an extra set of new batteries and asked users who notice a significant decrease in battery life to contact their local Medtronic ( MDT ) team to assess whether a replacement pump is needed.
