Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg Says Biden Administration Pressured Them to Censor COVID-19 Content
Aug 29, 2024 2:44 AM

07:01 AM EDT, 08/27/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Meta Platforms' ( META ) chief executive officer, Mark Zuckerberg, decried the Biden administration for repeatedly pressuring the social media company to censor COVID-19 content in 2021, according to a letter written by Zuckerberg and posted on Facebook by the US House of Representatives on Tuesday.

"In 2021, senior officials from the Biden Administration, including the White House, repeatedly pressured our teams for months to censor certain COVID-19 content, including humor and satire, and expressed a lot of frustration with our teams when we didn't agree," Zuckerberg wrote in the letter to the House's judiciary committee. He vowed in the letter to push back if this were to happen again.

"I believe the government pressure was wrong, and I regret we were not more outspoken about it," Zuckerberg said. "I also think we made some choices that, with the benefit of hindsight and new information, we wouldn't make today."

MT Newswires' attempts to reach the White House for comment were not immediately successful.
