Meta Ordered by Singapore to Curb Facebook Impersonation Scams, Faces Fine of up to $776,000
Sep 25, 2025 4:47 AM

07:20 AM EDT, 09/25/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Meta Platforms ( META ) was directed to deploy anti-impersonation safeguards on Facebook after Singapore issued an Implementation Directive on Wednesday, with compliance due by Tuesday, the Singapore Ministry of Home Affairs said Thursday.

The order, the first under the Online Criminal Harms Act, was issued by the authority in the Singapore Police Force to curb scams impersonating key government officials, the ministry said.

Meta must implement enhanced facial recognition in Singapore and prioritize review of reports from local users in order to remove such ads, accounts, profiles and business pages, the directive said.

Failure to comply without reasonable excuse could draw fines up to 1 million Singapore Dollar ($776,000) and, SG$100,000 for each additional day during which the offense continues, the ministry said.

Authorities have observed a rise in these Facebook impersonation scams between June last year to June this year, will work with Meta to extend protections to other public figures, and may impose similar requirements on other platforms, the ministry added.

Meta did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
