10:19 AM EDT, 10/23/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Meta Platforms' ( META ) Oversight Board said Wednesday that the company should allow a satirical image posted by a Facebook user with presidential candidate and Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
The image, based on a poster for the film "Dumb and Dumber," was removed by Facebook under the "Bullying and Harassment Community Standard," which forbids "derogatory sexualized photoshop or drawings."
The board said the image was restored after the user appealed the decision and it brought the case to the company's attention.
The board noted "the dangers that overenforcing the Bullying and Harassment policy can have, especially in the context of an election, as it may lead to the excessive removal of political speech and undermine the ability to criticize government officials and political candidates."
This post in question was "nothing more than a commonplace satirical image of prominent politicians and is instantly recognizable as such," the board said.
