07:44 AM EDT, 09/25/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Meta Platforms ( META ) is expected to preview its first augmented reality glasses at its annual Connect conference in California on Wednesday, alongside updates to its artificial intelligence and virtual reality products, media outlets reported.
Meta hasn't commented officially about the AR glasses, but Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg reportedly said they were close to being able to show their prototype of the product.
For AI features, Meta's current smart glasses would have an audio upgrade that offers the option to select celebrities' voices for Meta's chatbot, reports said.
The Facebook owner is planning to distribute the first generation of the AR glasses this year only internally and to a select group of distributors, a Reuters source said. The first commercial AR glasses are expected to be shipped in 2027 when technical developments have brought down the cost of production, the report said.
Meta did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment regarding the reported distribution plan.
