Meta Platforms Facing Probe in Europe Over Minors' Protection on Facebook, Instagram
May 16, 2024 4:45 AM

07:24 AM EDT, 05/16/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Meta Platforms ( META ) is facing a probe in Europe for potentially breaking the Digital Services Act for minor protection on its Facebook and Instagram platforms.

The European Commission said Thursday that it has opened formal proceedings against the social media giant over its compliance with regulations ensuring minors' privacy, safety, and security, as well as mitigation measures to prevent minors from accessing inappropriate content and reducing the risks caused by Facebook's and Instagram's online interfaces.

The Commission said it "is concerned that the systems of both Facebook and Instagram, including their algorithms, may stimulate behavioral addictions in children, as well as create so-called 'rabbit-hole effects'."

Meta did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
