Meta Platforms Fined $220 Million by Nigeria for Violating Consumer, Data Laws, Commission Says

03:48 PM EDT, 07/19/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Meta Platforms ( META ) was fined $220 million by Nigeria's Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission for violating the country's consumer rights and data protection laws, the commission said Friday.

Meta and its messaging service WhatsApp failed to protect the data of Nigerian users and shared information with other Facebook companies without proper consent, the commission said.

Meta was ordered to reinstate users' rights to control their data, to stop sharing information with third parties and to pay $35,000 to cover the cost of the investigation, the commission. The social media company has 15 days to implement changes to its privacy policy and 60 days to pay the fine and investigation cost.

Meta didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
