06:08 AM EST, 11/20/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Meta Platforms ( META ) has been ordered to pay 479 million euros ($552.2 million) to Spanish digital media outlets for alleged breach of the European General Data Protection Regulation, Spain's General Council of the Judiciary said Thursday.
The tech giant has to pay the amount to 87 Spanish digital press publishers and news agencies integrated into the Association of Information Media for gaining a "significant competitive advantage" through advertisements on Facebook and Instagram, the CGPJ said.
The CGPJ said Meta infringed "millions" of personal Facebook and Instagram users' data and obtained additional information from other websites that the users browsed, adding that Meta earned over 5.28 billion euros in Spain from online advertising during the five years of alleged infringement of data from 2018 to 2023.
Meta can appeal the ruling before the Provincial Court, the CGPJ said.
Meta did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
