Meta Platforms Reportedly to Start Shutting Down Teen Accounts in Australia
Nov 19, 2025 7:58 AM

09:18 AM EST, 11/19/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Meta Platforms ( META ) will remove Australian users under 16 from Instagram, Facebook and Threads starting Dec. 4 to meet the country's new age-restriction law, according to multiple news reports.

The company has begun alerting users it believes are between 13 and 15 that their accounts will be shut down and that new registrations from anyone under 16 will be blocked, according to the reports.

Meta expects to deactivate hundreds of thousands of accounts by Dec. 10. and warned that its age-checking tools carry a margin of error, meaning some users who are 16 or older may be incorrectly flagged, the Guardian reported.

Meta said teens can download their data before removal and regain access once they turn 16.

Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
