09:17 AM EDT, 08/20/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Meta Platforms' ( META ) changes to rules on the way it uses data of advertising customers have been accepted by the UK's Competition and Markets Authority, the regulator said Tuesday.
The CMA said that under the new approach that Meta plans to adopt, all advertisers can keep the ability to place advertisements on Facebook Marketplace and be assured that their advertising data are not being used to improve Facebook Marketplace, without the need to opt in or out of their data being used for that purpose.
Meta had originally pledged to limit how such data are used to prevent it from getting an unfair advantage, giving competitors of Facebook Marketplace that advertised on Meta's platforms the ability to "opt out" of their data being used to improve it, the CMA said.
"Having consulted advertisers and Facebook Marketplace users on the proposals, the CMA has concluded that the revisions go above and beyond the original commitments and would not leave any advertisers worse off," the regulator said.
Meta didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
