Meta Platforms Seeks Disclosure in Political Ads That Use AI Ahead of Canada Federal Election
Mar 20, 2025 8:28 AM

11:08 AM EDT, 03/20/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Meta Platforms ( META ) said Thursday that advertisers must disclose when artificial intelligence is used to create or alter political or social issue advertisements, as part of the company's efforts to fight misinformation ahead of the Canada federal election this year.

The Facebook-owner said the disclosure that it seeks includes digitally created or altered ads that contain a photorealistic image or video or realistic-sounding audio that shows a real person saying or doing something they didn't say or do.

The disclosure also covers ads that show a non-existent but realistic-looking person or a realistic-looking event that never happened, Meta said.

The company said the disclosure also applies to altered footage of a real event or a depiction of a realistic event that allegedly happened but isn't a real image, video or audio recording of the event.
